How to Build a Winning Team – Part 1

The word “team,” in many cases, is used rather loosely. A team is a group of people working towards a common goal. Many teams are not genuine, but are simply a” group” of individuals reporting to the same person.

To compete in today’s competitive environment, teams have to be built to compete on various levels. The Chicago Bulls were a team. It consisted of “stars.” The Bulls consistently won. Other teams had “stars” but could not effectively unify and function as a team. Miami Heat had stars: LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh. The Dallas Mavericks has stars but are a unified team of stars. As a result, the Dallas Mavericks won the 2011 NBA Finals. Individual stars on a team cannot compare to a team made of unified team players. Team results are much more than the sum of individual efforts. As Coach Phil Jackson once said when he was coaching the Chicago Bulls, “The strength of the team is each individual member...the strength of each member is the team." Below are the Top 6 Steps to Building a Winning Team:

1. Provide Great Leadership – a successful team begins with a great leader.
• Lead by example. Walk the talk.
• Reduce micromanagement and start delegating.
• Always be approachable.
• Be sincere to establish trust and respect.
• Demonstrate confidence and transmit it to the team.
• Be committed to the project and all of the team members.

2. Set the Conditions for Success – everyone needs to know the common goal.
• Define the vision, strategy, and processes.
• Communicate clearly the goal, expectations for the team’s performance, and expected outcomes.
• Show the big picture of what is to be accomplished.

3. Create Synergy – cohesive teams share and build on each other’s strengths.
• Identify and assess the unique talent and skills to determine the tasks best suitable for each team member.
• Capitalize on skills and create rightful expectations.
• Leverage the talent to multiply and accelerate the results.

4. Develop Mutual Trust and Support – cultivate a good team and support system.
• Remind the team they are all equal.
• Respect each other and their differences.
• Reinforce dedication.

5. Engage the Team Members - Make sure everyone on the team is 100% involved and engaged.
• Communicate, communicate, communicate. It’s the most effective and cheapest way to boost team engagement.
• Provide positive, creative, and constructive criticism to improve project status.
• Support and encourage new ideas.

6. Recognize, Reward, and Celebrate – celebrate the accomplishment no matter how small.
• Harness the positives and underplay the negatives.
• Recognize individuals' efforts on a regular, consistent, and timely basis both publicly and privately.
• Continue to inspire the team to do their best.
