Writing a Business Plan and Small Business Resources

Recently a young friend of mine wanted to
start a business as a part-time job after school. He was dissatisfied with his
current part-time, after school job and wanted to do something better that was
not only more mentally challenging but also paid more.

Being under 25, he has a number of opportunities
presented by the government that is currently encouraging youth to be entrepreneurs--something that is not normally taught in most schools.

Consequently, his questions and interest
led me to put together some information that will be of benefit to him and can
be to others, hence my blog.

The following links are helpful for new entrepreneurs. Although they come from Canada, the
principles are the same.  The government incentives may differ from
nation to nation and state to state so local information will need to be sought.

This video is a good starting point. It takes one through the basics of what is
required in a business plan.
I would
also suggest going to banks as they often have information for small business
owners.

These links are government links that provide
additional resources and considerations:

There are several other videos available
that provide slightly different perspectives on business plans.
I think the three together are a pretty good
representation:

If entrepreneurship is something of
interest, I also recommend the following book:

Canadian Entrepreneurship and Small Business
Management
by
Wesley Balderson (a professor at the University of Lethbridge, consultant, and entrepreneur).
I recently noted that it was available on
Amazon.ca.

I have an
older edition, but I doubt it has changed dramatically.
It provides excellent details on whether to
buy into a franchise, start from scratch, or buy a business as well as much
more detail on writing a business plan than any of the video links I could
find.
